The oval gem is carved in two layers with pale blue on dark blue. A scene is engraved of a warrior standing with this foot raised on a pile of rocks, with a shield on the floor in front, his spear behind him, holding a helmet in his hand. The intaglio is set in a stepped gold bezel, with a slightly later gold band carved with foliate decoration at the shoulders.
Condition: There is minor surface wear to the gem, with shallow chipping on the reverse. The setting and band are both antique but not contemporary with each other and the band has been altered to make it larger.
English private collection, mounted in the 19th century
Literature
The scene of a warrior holding a helmet has victory connotations like that of a trophy, or scenes of Venus Victrix holding a helmet out in front, perhaps as the spoils of war or an honouring of the dead.
