A fragment from a fine cartonnage sarcophagus with polychrome painted decoration on a plaster and linen surface. The decoration depicts a seated god with an Ankh resting on his knees and a sun disc crown over his head. The background consists of a yellow and blue net pattern on an orange/red ground.
Provenance
Reputedly from ThebesFrench private collection, Paris, acquired in the 1970s: A label inside reads: ” Fragment de sarcophage, Thebes, Basse Egypt, 1580 a 1086 Avant J.C.”
Literature
The colouring of this fragment is a feature of Third Intermediate Period sarcophagai. There is an example for Meresamun, also from Thebes and now in Chicago which demonstrates a similar colour palette: Oriental Institute Museum, University of Chicago, acc. no. OIM 10797.1
