Alabastra were small types of vessels used primarily for holding precious oils, especially perfumes and massage oils. The alabastron was so called because of the large number made from cream coloured stone, alabaster. Unlike Attic alabastra which were suspended, Apulian alabastra were made with a foot. The form of this finely potted vessel is rare.
