Decorated around the middle with a frieze of reddish and black alternating linked lotus and palmettes, bands above and below, with rays radiating from the foot and a band of triangular motifs on the shoulder.

Provenance

Swiss private collection, Basel, acquired at Munzen und Medaillen, Basel, Auktion 16, 30 June 1956, p.22, lot 79, taf. 15

Literature

For further discussion see M.K. Risser, Corinth VII, 5. Corinthian Conventualizing Pottery, Princeton, 2000. Cf. pl. 6, no. 64 for a similar ornament on the shoulder; for the black and red stripes below the lotus & palmette, cf. pl. 24, no. 403; and for the vase as a whole (albeit an oinochoe), cf. pl. 31, no. 500. The latter is dated to the third quarter of the 6th century, but the Kallos example is a little later, in the 4th quarter of the 6th century BC.

For the Painter of Berlin F 1090 see D.A. Amyx, Corinthian Vase-Painting of the Archaic Period, p. 175-177, California, 1988. For a full discussion of the type and similar examples; J. Chamay and J-L. Maier, Céramiques Corinthiennes, Geneva, 1984, pp. 66-67. For further exploration regarding padded dancers, see A. Seeberg, 'Corinthian Komos Vases', Bulletin Supplement (University of London, Institute of Classical Studies), no. 27, 1971, pp.iii-107.
