Literature
The production of glossy, all black pottery in Greece was at its peak during the 6th century BC and Laconia (Sparta) was a major centre for such production. The region was also famous for its bronze-working, and it has been suggested that black-glazed kraters may have provided a more affordable alternative to their bronze counterparts. Such large vessels were used for mixing wine at banquets and symposia.
