Provenance

Private collection, Europe, probably acquired in the 19th century (based on the old base and the collection stamp, dated to 1887)
Private collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s

Literature

The idealising features of the face and the treatment of the hair find their closest parallels on Attic funerary monuments of the 4th century BC. For the hair, see C.W. Clairmont, Classical Attic Tombstones, 1993, nos. 2.343 and 2.436; for the treatment of the facial features see I. Laube, Expedition Ernst von Sieglin: Skulpturen des Hellenismus und der Kaiserzeit aus Ägypten, 2012, no. 28 (Dionysus).
