Probably Jupiter or Asclepius, with his long curling hair centrally-parted and bound with a diadem around the crown of his head, a thick beard and moustache above his full slightly parted lips, his brow furrowed, his lidded eyes articulated with drilled pupils.
Condition: Minor chipping to the tip of the nose and the locks of the hair. Some of the original pigment remaining. The underside of the neck has been sawn off and drilled for insertion of a pin for mounting.
Richard and Molly Alexander Collection, Brighton, UK, acquired before the late 1970s
Literature
This head comes from a small-scale statue of the god, likely votive. Asclepius was the god of medicine with his major cult centre at Epidauros in Greece.
