School’s out… so it’s time for classics camp!

Kallos Gallery’s Director of Events, Education and Outreach, Dr. Liz Sawyer, swapped Mayfair for Derbyshire last week, to teach on the JACT Classical Civilisation and Ancient History Summer School, held at Repton School.

The summer school offers the opportunity for sixth formers to learn about a range of classical subjects, from the Minoans and the Myceneans to ancient and modern philosophy. Approximately half of the students are from state schools in which only limited classical subjects are offered, and in many cases the summer school provides a unique chance to be surrounded by a group of their peers who also share an interest in learning about the ancient world, and be taught by highly experienced teachers and specialists in the field. The summer school is supported by a range of institutions including the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, and the Cambridge Schools Classics Project.

Liz has taught for the summer school for the last three years, and finds it an incredibly rewarding and inspiring experience. “The students are extremely motivated, and I am always very impressed by the calibre of the discussion that arises in the classroom, whether we are studying ancient theories of medicine or the portrayal of the god Dionysus in Euripides’ Bacchae.” She is certain that the experience of the summer school and the confidence that it gives to students encourages many to apply to read classics or ancient history at university. “I think that the best moment of all is a few days in when you hear the students say to each other that they are definitely going to go on to read classics. But it is pretty difficult to choose between that moment and the one when they tell you at the end that the best thing that they have got out of the summer school is ‘true friendship’.”
