Western Empire, mid – 1st century AD

A Roman aubergine glass kantharos

Blown from aubergine glass with white trail at the rim and the twisted handles. This is a rare form and is beautifully executed and preserved. There is a related broken blue glass example also on a flaring foot with twisted handles and white trail from the Belfer Collection, now in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.

Grunfeld Collection, Germany, acquired in the 1970s, thence by descent
